The Forest Squad adopts an ecological framework to explore ideas of nature, power, and cooperation. I have taken inspiration from the nature in which plants and fungi are interconnected. My work visualizes them as forming an underground network: an ecosystem that mirrors human-centric social structures. By anthropomorphizing trees and fungi, I tell a story of a “mother tree” who communicates with a community of fungi in order to distribute resources and maintain balance within the forest. “Mother Tree Theory” was developed by Suzanne Simard, a pioneer in the field of ecology, and posits that certain older trees within forests are connected to other plants via an underground mycorrhizal network. My playful and colorful animation explores important themes of mutual support, resource sharing, and collective survival in the face of threats.
